JP Conte has funded The Bay Lights twice, once in 2012 and again for its 2026 return. Illuminate relit the installation on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on March 20, 2026, after several years without it.
He gave the nonprofit a short statement for its announcement. He called the relit work “a reminder that wonder still belongs in the center of civic life.”
The Artist’s Purpose
Leo Villareal is the artist behind the work, which first lit the bridge in 2013. “I think of The Bay Lights as a way of making invisible systems visible,” he said in Illuminate’s announcement.
His original version used about 25,000 bulbs, according to KQED. The rebuilt one runs on LEDs.
From 2012 to 2026
Conte’s first gift came before the original installation lit the bridge in March 2013. That version ran for a decade before its bulbs wore out, and it was switched off in 2023.
The replacement came on March 20, 2026. Illuminate announced the date a month ahead and planned to broadcast the Grand Lighting live on social media. Since then, the work has run every night from dusk until dawn.
Who Paid for It
Conte, founder and managing partner of his family office, Lupine Crest Capital, was one of the returning donors. Illuminate described him as a key funder of the original in 2012, the year before it first lit the bridge.
Private donors paid for the new installation, Illuminate said, and JP Conte was among them. Its supporters ranged from large givers to grassroots contributors, more than 1,300 people in all, and its LEDs were engineered for the bridge by Musco Lighting.
Choosing a Cause
Conte has written about how donors decide where to give. A June 2025 column he published in Forbes Business Council treated it as a personal choice, and Jean-Pierre Conte urged business leaders to “identify what you are passionate about supporting.”
“As with any investor, no matter how much money you have, capital is always finite,” he wrote in that column. Donors, in his view, should research an organization before giving to it.
Giving in the City
Jean-Pierre Conte’s giving in San Francisco covers education in addition to public art. The J-P Conte Family Foundation calls the city home, and he has given steadily to SEO Scholars and 10,000 Degrees, two Bay Area education programs.
He has also written that donors should stay involved after a gift. J-P Conte told business leaders in an August 2025 Forbes column to “remain an involved community member.”
